The process of assessing hail damage is sometimes subjective. Damage can range from minor bruises to major punctures. Surprisingly small amounts of damage can harm the granulated surfaces resulting in future deficiencies.
The granulated surfaces protect the underlying bitumen from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays. Without the granules on the shingles the asphaltic bitumen will eventually deteriorate, exposing the fiberglass substrate and creating a potential leak.
Large hail can puncture roofs and become an immediate water hazard to the interior contents. This kind of damage is objective. All parties concerned agree on this damage. Significant granular loss may reduce the life expectancy of the shingle. This kind of damage is subjective. This is why it is imperative to have your SDAT rep present to assist the insurance adjuster.
